Is Facebook Making Us Lonely?

Americans are lonely. There’s much scientific evidence to suggest that social networking sites like Facebook my play a part in our loneliness epidemic. Some studies show a clear link between narcissistic behavior on Facebook and loneliness in our daily lives. Two things seem certain, Facebook is a massive and highly consumable good and Americans are growing lonelier with every generation. Whether these two are connected is not proven, but is stressed as a possibility.

The revelation that the article’s author had when he learned of other people feeling a little depressed when they scroll through their Facebook feed and see other people doing wonderful, exciting things is one that I think everyone could use. Facebook is making us unhappy by creating unrealistic standards of what a full or enjoyable life is. Nothing in this world is non-stop joy and it is sobering to discover this.

The article was well researched and included much factual data. The introduction was very jarring and set a very bleak tone for the article, which never brightened up all the way to the end. The plain and quiet language made the feeling of loneliness and emptiness described by the words almost flow through the reader. Differing opinions scattered throughout the article mirrored the buzz of a Facebook news feed.

Great article!
